Dan Gun legend

Dan Gun is the legendary founder of Korea, in 2333 B.C. But that isn’t the only legend about him.

His grandfather was called Hwanin, the “Lord of Heaven”. Hwanin had a son, Hwanung, the “Supreme Divine Regent”. Hwanung was one of about 3000 followers of Hwanin to descend from Heaven to what is now called Taebaek Mountain, where Hwanung founded a city with the other followers, and taught humans many things from their city.

Meanwhile, a tiger and a bear prayed to Hwanung to become human. Hwanung answered their prayers, giving them sacred food: only 20 cloves of garlic and a bundle of mugwort, and told them they must eat only this sacred food and stay out of sunlight for 100 days, and they would become human.

But the tiger gave up after about 20 days, and left the cave. The bear persevered and was transformed into a woman. This woman, who used to be a bear, was grateful, and made offerings in thanks to Hwanung. But after a while she was sad, having no husband and no children. She prayed again to Hwanung, who took him for his wife, and she had a son they named Dan Gun.

Yellow-Green Pattern

Here is a little info on the Yellow-Green pattern.

Name: Do-San Hyung
Meaning: The pseudonym for the Korean patriot Ahn-Chang-Ho, who devoted his life to furthering the education of Korea and to the Korean Independence Movement. The 24 motions represent his life.

Won-Hyo Hyung Pattern

Name: Won-Hyo Hyung
Meaning: Won-Hyo is the monk who introduced Buddhism to Korea in 686 AD.
# of Motions: 28

Please note the following differences between the video and how we practice the pattern in class:

*The video refers to L-Stances, we call these back stances.
*Motions #1, #4, #13, & #16, we start this motion from a saucer & tea cup, whereas the video starts the motion from in front of the chest.
*Motions #8, #9, #25, & #26 we have our hands in a saucer & tea cup, the video keeps the hands in guard.
*On the knife hands, we move the hands in a more linear motion close to the chest, the video moves the hands in a more circular motion further from the chest. (This one is more so sloppiness than a difference).
*Motion #12, we perform a groin strike, which is aimed lower than the spear finger used in the video, but otherwise practiced the same way. We also yell on this motion.
*Motions #19 & #22, we do not bend our knees down and then up on, we instead use a regular front stance.
*Motions #27 &#28, we use a regular fighting stance, as opposed to a back stance and block as done in the video.

I also want to point out that in the above video the pattern is performed rather sloppily, though I am posting it anyway since it clearly explains what motions to perform. (Once again, refer to the above paragraph to see the differences between the video and how we practice the pattern).

Please note that all of the punches in this pattern are high punches (even with the nose).

Unfortunately, I can’t find a good video of this pattern with an angle from behind the person.

There are a few terminology differences in the diagram compared to what we use in class, but it has all the same motions.

Uniform Washing

Uniform

You must wash your uniform at least once a week.

Your sparring gear must be washed at least once a month, preferably biweekly. For the cloth pads, you may simply throw them in the wash with the rest of the clothes. The pads may sometimes become mispositioned within the pad, at which point the simply need to be repositioned, make sure to fix them before coming to class, not at class when it is time to spar.

For the vinyl pads (i.e. helmet and chestguard) you may simply use a clorox wipe or similar product/method.
